Sartorial Made to Measure

A few millimetres on your seat tube or a single degree in your seat or head tube angle can make all the difference to the overall performance of your ride. You only realise how important these slight changes are in your position until you have a bike custom made for you. The most important part of the process is the measuring which is why we will include a free session with the best bike fitting company, Velosolutions. They will measure you and look at your natural position and then design the perfect bike geometry for you.

Sartorial Handmade Construction

The main difference between the Sartorial and other frames in this price bracket is that not only is the geometry completely bespoke to the customer but the tubing is made for the customer. Other made to measure bikes use stock tubing which won't necessarily be 100% suitable for the rider, ie if you are a 100kg powerhouse sprinter then you will want your tubing to reflect this, with the Sartorial the tubeset will be made with this in mind.

Once the tubeset have been made the frame builder will position and bound the tubes together with epoxy resin. Specific resins are used on different parts of the frame to ensure the correct strength of each bond. The frame is then part-cured in the autoclave which is ensures the resin holds the joints in place.

Each joint is then hand wrapped with carbon pre-preg in order to create the lugs. This is a crucial part of the process and a very skilled job and must be done in the right enviromental conditions as to avoid and contamination between layers of carbon. The wrapper must also know how exactly many layers to place on each joint which is also changed for each rider and their type of riding. A special compression tape is then placed over the wrapped sections and the frame is ready for the curing process.

This process takes place in a specialist autoclave, it has taken our frame builders many years to develop a unique curing process which results in the highest possible strength, low weight using this handmade lug process. The details of this process are very much a closely guarded secret, the end result is that the individual layers of carbon effectively mould into a solid section of carbon and resin. This new “joint” or “lug” is ultra low void, meaning there is an even mixture of the resin and carbon and no micro air pockets exist inside the lug. This achieved through a careful balance of internal and external atmospheric pressure and temperature curves. [note, the autoclave used by our frame builders is a very specialist and expensive piece of equipment, many other hand made frames in the market are manufactured without this essential “oven” something that is not easy to detect/know once a frame is built, but essential to the performance of the final frame. The frame is then taken from the oven and allowed to cool and finish setting. Once fully “cured” the frame is ready to be hand finished, this process depends on whether the frames lugs are to be smooth [invisible]. After this process the frame is then ready to be painted.

Sartorial ride characteristics

It's very hard to describe ride characteristics of a carbon bike but the Satorial feels right whatever you are doing on it, so it's just as happy cruising as it is hammering it at 40mph. The problem with many of the top end carbon bikes, is that they only really perform at speed and especially monocoque frames ie. they don't feel right when cruising, which is fine if you only race on it but most of us do like to ride below 30mph at times. Stiffness wise you will be hard pushed to find a stiffer bike but comfort levels are sky high as well. It's light enough for climbing but yet one of the most stable bikes you'll ever descend on which is down to the expertise of the frame builder and the millimetre adjustments made to the angles while the tubeset is in the computerised jig .

The perfect carbon bike is a big statement but we feel this is what we can build for you here.
